Call for doctoral symposium papers

The Doctoral Symposium of Middleware 2014 will be held in Bordeaux, France in conjunction with the Middleware 2014 Conference. Following the aim of past edition, the scope of the current event will be focused on providing PhD students an opportunity to discuss their research on all types of middleware in an international forum, and with a panel of well-known experts in the field.

New in this year’s Symposium is the fact that we aim to bring together a broad range of students: 1. PhD students at the start of their trajectory 2. students in the middle (maybe aiming for the first top-level publication) 3. students who are about to finish (what are the pitfalls in the final stages?).

Students will have the occasion to discuss, in a welcoming and informal atmosphere, the goals planned and already achieved, the key research challenges they are interested in, the projects they are working on, the facilities they are developing, in essence, the problems they want to solve and why they are solving them in their doctoral work.

During the Doctoral Symposium students will receive useful feedback from senior researchers, industrial partners and experts. It will be as well a good opportunity for meeting and sharing experiences with other PhD students addressing similar topics or at a similar stage in their doctoral work. This way the students will obtain guidance both on the academic content of their current work and regarding the potential future research trajectories.

All PhD students carrying out research in Middleware are invited to submit a position paper to the doctoral Symposium. Short papers will be peer-reviewed by the Symposium’s program committee members. The criteria used for accepting a paper include overall quality of the position paper, contribution of the work to the field, originality of the work, and overall quality of the position paper. PhD proposals fitting to the Middleware conference topics are especially encouraged. This includes a diversity of topics such as but not limited to these broad fields:

  • Middleware Platforms and Usage Models
  • Systems Issues for Middleware
  • Middleware Design Principles and Tools

Accepted position papers will be presented during the Doctoral Symposium and presenters of the doctoral symposium will also get an opportunity to present their work in poster format during the main program of Middleware 2014. The organizers of the doctoral symposium intend to publish post-proceedings of the Doctoral Symposium – details will follow.
